Hawaii Football club clinics in Waimea

The Hawaii Football Club will host a free clinic featuring former University of Hawaii offensive lineman Brian Derby in Waimea and Hilo.

The Waimea clinic will be held Monday-Tuesday, June 10-11. The Hilo clinic will be held Wednesday-Thursday, June 12-13 at Hilo High. Youth group times are from 9-10:30 a.m. The high school group times are from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

In July, HFC will host a free clinic featuring Kahuku High coach Reggie Torres and his staff in Kona and Hilo.

The Kona clinic for youth will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. July 26 at the Old Kona Airport. The high school clinic will follow and run from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

The Hilo clinic for youth will be held from 9-10:30 a.m. July 27 at Waiakea High. The high school group will follow and run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Two qualifying spots for local publinx

The USGA has allotted the Hilo section two berths into the 88th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, which will be held July 15-20, 2013 at the Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton, Va.

A total of 40 entrants will compete for the coveted spots in a 36-hole qualifying round on Saturday at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

The USGA is retiring the event after the 2014 season.

Past qualifiers Dalen Yamauchi and Chris Igawa are entered and will be among the favorites to qualify. For more information, call USGA Committeeman Lance Taketa at 987-2971.

Mana Silva football clinic at Panaewa

Mana Silva of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills will conduct a free football clinic from 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday, June 15 at the Panaewa Park gym.

The clinic will feature offense and defense modern concepts as well as techniques and skills.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.

Refreshments and autographs follow the clinic.

Yanagi just misses at Adams qualifier

Hilo’s Pono Yanagi shot a 79 in the 11-12 age division at the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association’s Adams qualifier Monday at Turtle Bay on Oahu.

The upcoming seventh grader was one shot back of Honolulu’s AJ Teraoka, who had a 78. Hilo’s Riku Omata was eighth with a 101 total. He’s a soon-to-be seventh grader.

In the girls 15-18 age group, Waiakea senior-to-be Andi Igawa tied for 14th with an 82.

In the boys 15-18, Waiakea upcoming sophomore Trevor Hirata shot a 78 for 19th place.

Hilo High coaching openings deadline

Hilo High School is currently accepting applications for the following positions for the 2013-14 school year: Boys volleyball coach, boys tennis coach, water polo coach.

To apply, stop by the main office between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Applications will be accepted through June 26.

All-BIIF water polo teams not released

The Big Island Interscholastic Federation has yet to release the league’s All-BIIF water polo teams.

All of the league’s voted All-BIIF teams for spring sports (baseball, softball, boys volleyball) have been announced.

The BIIF water polo season ended April 27. The Hawaii High School Athletic Association state tournament finished May 7.

Kamehameha captured the BIIF championship, its fourth straight undefeated season in league play. Hawaii Prep was the BIIF runner-up.
